Is it hypocritical for women with natural hair to wear wigs?

As some of you may know, my reason for going natural was spiritual. If God is good and His creations are good, then my hair is good without a perm, Genesis 1:31. Going natural has taught me a lot about myself and everyone else, but I'll save that for another post.

Lately I have been wanting to rock a wig. As summer comes to an end and we approach the fall season, I realize that I can't continue to rock "wash n go's". And besides that, I simply want to rock a wig.

I can see why some would call a woman who has natural hair sporting a wig a hypocrite. When someone decides to go natural it is usually seen as a political statement. Ever since I went natural I've been called Angela Davis numerous times. So quite naturally it SEEMS like a woman who cares about the community and the well being of people wouldn't be concerned with something so minor as her hair or a wig.

On the other hand if a woman who has natural hair chooses to sport a wig, then that's her choice. I am NEVER ashamed of my natural hair. I have always been a person who loves diversity and like to switch things up a bit. Wearing a wig will give me more choices on how to wear my hair. It does not take away from the reason why one goes natural. At the end of the day as long as my hair is still natural, then that's all that matters.

Thoughts?

  1. I'm not a fan of wigs, nothing to do with being natural or once having a relaxer, just never been a fan. But wearing wigs as a natural doesn't make you a hypocrite... It's a protective style and the winter is a good time to wear one.

Now if a natural becomes dependent on wigs and any other styles that prevent him/her from doing their hair and wearing it out for reasons other than laziness, then that may be a problem.

  2. i think it's a bunch of baloney to say that a natural haired woman is a hypocrite for switching up by wearing a wig or weave. Are Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson called sellout phonies because THEY wear extensions? People need to fall back lol. If you keep your hair clean and moisturized then flat twist or cornrow to go under a wig, it's a great protective style for winter.

I went natural because I was was tired of relaxers. not to make a statement, not to become a vegetarian earth chick, not for any other reason than I wanted to. People do it for all kinds of reasons, but there's nothing saying that they have to all go about it the same way. I'm not less natural because I decide to still wear makeup nor would you be any less natural haired because you rock a wig. Your hair still isn't chemically changed :)

  3. I dont see anything wrong with wearing a wig or weave instead of rocking ur fro from time to time. Wigs & weaves can be protective styles that allow ur natural hair to be covered up and letting the hair rest. Its not hypocritical at all to me. I definitely agree with the comment above. I am not less natual because of wearing a wig for a few days. People can do what they want to do with their hair!

  4. There is nothing wrong with wearing a wig, I know for myself, most people thought my real hair was a wig...LOL! No but seriously, in the winter time it is hard to keep your hair moist with out wetting your hair everyday, so wigs or weave are perfect in the winter time. I think some natural women are too pro-natural and think that if you wear a wig or weave then you are selling out, Why is that, some of us live in cold climate where it's negative 40 below in February and I'm sorry but if the weather calls for a wig, you better believe I'm gonna rock one! I love my natural hair, and I will do anything to protect it, so for those who are totally against it, oh well, I'm rocking a wig this winter, matter fact I'm gonna be like Regine off of "Living Single" and wear a different wig every week....LOL!

  5. It's all a matter of preference. I LOVE being natural and being relaxer free, however I also love changing up my look. I may be afro'd out, wearing two strands, braids with or without weave, OR A WIG! And yes even straight! Why? Because if I did want to straighten my hair, I wouldn't want to put that heat on my own natural hair every day. Not to mention I love the way my hair looks straight! Being natural is not about starting a pro-natural movement where people/women bash women for anything for anything not curly, kinky, twisted, dreaded etc....i.e., to them unnatural. It's about empowering women to embrace natural hair and move away from relaxers, and allow their hair to be natural while feeling free!

    SO ROCK YOUR WIG GIRL!!!!!

  6. I'm not a fan of anything artificial. I've gone natural through Michigan winters, including wash and go. What issues are you having with winter natural hair?

  7. I've been wearing wigs for about 4 years on and off and decided to go natural last year. I didn't love my natural hair at first, but I've found Kinky Curly products and I'm starting to love my hair! I don't see anything wrong with changing your style. I love versitility!

  8. Wearing a wig is like wearing a scarf or a beanie or a durag.

    Its like a hair accessory.

  9. A wig means different things to different women. Some women will not leave the house with a wig,and for others it is just a styling option. As far as naturals go, there are extemist and liberals in any group, and a natural hair group is no exception. Some naturals do not believe in any type of chemical product on the hair including hair color and products that define texture. While others believe a "mild texturizer" is ok.I have been natural for seven years and I have worn just about every style (twa, bwa, locs, etc), and I believe that you must take ownership of your journey

  10. Thanks for all of your insight ladies! @Napfrocurlzgirl, as the temp drops it's not a good idea for me to continue wash n gos. Besides that I just want to switch things up a bit.

  11. There's definitely nothing wrong with wearing a wig. If you feel that its best for you at this time then go for it. The "stereotype" of natural women is a little disappointing if you ask me, but thankfully there are so many of us that we are challenging the stereotype. If a natural woman wearing a wig is a hypocrite then so is every other woman that wears one. It would be different if we disagreed w/ the practice of wig making from an ethical standpoint. So wear you wig believe me its give you a break and it may help you realize that you love your hair more.

  12. As a woman with transitioning hair and trying to really figure and develop my beautiful thick and Oh so hard to manage hair right, no I don't think if you wear a wig it's hypocritical nor a weave. It is a way to protect your hair and give it some "rest" while you're trying to figure out what to do next to it. If it's natural that's one thing but if it's natural and healthy is totally different! I know nykki you take care of your hair and look at PLENTY of magazines, websites, videos, blogs, whatever to give you strong healthy hair. So rock the wig, the weave, the fro, the curls, the straight you answer to one person and you know your doing your best to reflect what He says about you : )

  13. I used to wear natural looking wigs way before i went natural. Now I've been natural for 3 years and i have a whole lot of hair that i never knew i had. I love my hair natural but i also like how i use to to look. Going natural is some that comes from inside that you show outwardly. so if you're natural under a wig it doesn't stop you from being natural. Its cold now in NY and i wet my hair everyday and it doesn't dry so fast anymore. and it cant even fit under a proper hat so I recently put in a weave because i don't wanna get sick. So i'm behind you all the way girl. when you come home from work and you take your wig off your beautiful hair is still there. that's the difference between that and a relaxer. synthetic is fine when needed.
